"Don't Tell Me," short story excerpt

Saturday 7/30/22

Don’t tell me to stop after I’ve started.

Don’t tell me to look when I’ve already seen.

Don’t tell me to talk when I’ve already spoken.

Don’t tell me to have faith when I am asking questions.

Don’t tell me to retreat when I am getting ready to start again.

Don’t tell me to accept when I am challenging.

Don’t tell me to push when I am pulling.

Don’t tell me to follow when I am leading.

Don’t tell me to hear when I am listening.

Don’t tell me to travel when I am journeying.

Don’t tell me to set out when I am questing.

Don’t tell me to echo when I am singing.

Don’t tell me to shimmer when I am exploding.

Don’t tell me to leap when I am soaring.

Don’t tell me to go along when I have already left.

Don’t tell me to begin again when I never stopped.

Don’t tell me to repeat when I am premiering.

Don't tell me to do what has been done when I am inventing.

Don’t tell me to take heed when I am still thinking.

Don’t tell me to exist when I am living.

Don’t tell me to recreate when I am creating.

Don’t tell me to stay down when I am following the sky.

Don’t tell me to borrow when I am birthing.

Don’t tell me to be you when I am not.

Don’t tell me to like when I can love.

Don’t tell me to like just because someone can.

Don’t tell me to believe distance has to do with miles.

Don’t tell me to concede brokenness when I am rebuilding.

Don’t tell me to forget simply because it’s over.

Don’t tell me to think less as I'm able to think more.

Don’t tell me to be grateful for what I have when I know what I deserve.

Don’t tell me it isn’t working when there’s work to be done.

Don’t tell me to harken when I can herald.

Don’t tell me to find a light when I can shine one.

Don’t tell me to hum when I can sing.

Don’t tell me to stay back when the foreground needs attention.

Don’t tell me not to risk my balance when I can get up again.

Don’t tell me to protect myself when my armor is within.

Don’t tell me to shield my heart when my heart is a shelter.

Don’t tell me to nurture my soul when my soul nurtures me.

Don’t tell me to be less direct when I walk straight lines.

Don’t tell me to lie when I care too much to leave out the truth.

Don’t tell me to take the easy way out when the only important way is in.

Don’t tell me to have patience when I’ve been waiting.

Don’t tell me to answer when I’ve been calling.

Don’t tell me to turn the other cheek when I’ve turned everything but my back.

Don’t tell me to pray when I have faith.
