Grass stains

Shake some action. It's what you need.

You do more you feel better. You do less you don't.

August is a good month because you can look forward to fall and Christmas and you don't have to be sad that fall and Christmas are almost over or already over. But it's also easy to feel good about fall and Christmas in April because they're really not close to being over and they're ahead of you. But I also feel that way about them all year. Sometimes I think I like fall and Christmas most when it's not fall and Christmas and I look forward to them or maybe I'm just someone whose life is very bad and all I'm left with is looking forward to things or trying to, even if they won't happen. (And also trying to make them happen.)

I would have loved to be able to watch Carlton Fisk every day with the Boston Red Sox. It feels like he was invented more than existed. Man from New England is all-time great catcher for local nine when hardly any players from New England grew up to be baseball players.

You measure from the loss column. It's the loss column that matters.

I think Alfred Hitchcock made Alfred Hitchcock Presents just because he wanted to do the intros and outros so much.

Go to the ballet. You'll like it. Bet you'll be surprised if you think there's no way you would.

Walk the halls of a museum at night when there aren't many people there. You'll like that, too, and not just because of the art on the walls.

Interesting people have interests. Everyone thinks they do and because they usually don't have a clue what either entails and who wouldn't want to think they're interesting and without interests?

Grass stains are good for children if not their clothes.

Grass stains are also good for the soul. These grass stains needn't involve grass.

Endings that rely on a twist make it harder for you to go back again and you want to be able to go back again just like every great work of art should endeavor to be something that gives you ample reason (and need) to return over and over again. Like to the house of a good friend who loves you.

Shane MacGowan's "Dark Streets of London" is a winter song for summer, because the outside isn't the inside.

MacGowan: And all of this really means nothing to me. Lennon: It doesn't matter much to me. Mattering about not mattering is mattering.

People don't know. They just say things. They've decided to be this way like a person who says, "That's final," only it's themselves they're not giving a second chance (or whatever number we're on) and they don't know that either.

The poet will usually go for the rhyme rather than the sense if he's only able to pick one. A good, hard-to-get rhyme can prove too tempting. Men who aren't poets have often foundered on those rocks in the course of their lives.

Course and Coarse walked into a war. Only one of them came out. You've knifed me, my brother.

"Tune in next week." What if I'm gone? Are you also telling me to assume another week of earthly existence? You're probably good for it. But imagine if you're not and how painfully that "Tune in next week" goes through every last part of you.

In the Epigrams, Wise Cracks and Jokes section of his Notebooks, F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, "Let's all live together," which I find hilarious, but you'd also have to think about it because he didn't just mean ha ha ha let's all live together.

"I'm so afraid I'll fall." Don't be. Look around. Where do you think you are?
