Gunsmoke, Bruins, Monday dispensation, downed Nuggets, Vaccines radio, delayered

Tuesday 5/7/24

Listening to a lot of Gunsmoke and reading quite a bit of M.R. James.

Heard two consecutive Gunsmoke episodes--by air date--in which no one was killed. Was that a record?

We don't know much, if anything, about Chester's physical appearance until his father comes to town and doesn't recognize his son because of how much he's "fattened up."

Chester has a curious job: jailhouse assistant. He's not referred to by this title, but he's also not a deputy. Sometimes he's called "helper," which is appropriate. Jailhouse assistant is like managing editor.

If radio has a Fab Four, it's the four principal characters/actors of Gunsmoke.

Howard McNear was gifted for the radio medium. Real talent, versatility, and a distinctiveness in every role.

The Bruins downed the Panthers 5-1 in Florida in Game 1 of that series. I wouldn't put much stock in the result. I know, that sounds unduly harsh. I'd call it tempered instead. As I said yesterday, the Bruins had an advantage in that the Panthers had a layoff and the Bruins were coming straight from battle. But there's more. The Panthers got nearly 40 shots on goal, outshooting the Bruins by a decent margin. Boston was poor again in the face-off circle. Charlie McAvoy did not register a single shot on net, being the only Bruins defenseman without at least one.

So what's going on? The Bruins have a hot goaltender in Jeremy Swayman. That's what's happening.

I don't have numbers in front of me to support this, but it seems that for the longest time the Red Sox have been a team who just doesn't play on Mondays for the most part. There are games on Mondays in baseball, but they're rarely Red Sox games. I just kind of assume they won't have a game on a Monday and then they don't. Did MLB decide however many years ago that the Red Sox would have a lot of Mondays off? Why? It seems like a strange dispensation.

Minnesota is really taking it to Denver in that series, having won the first two games on the road. Last night was emphatic. Game 1, someone got hot, okay, but Game 2 was just an ass kicking when Denver really needed the victory. Who loses the first two games of a series at home and wins an NBA series? Denver is going to need some adjustments.

Been listening to the hell out of fine BBC radio session by the Vaccines from January of this year. Radio sessions can be the best. This is also the only way you could get me to listen to "The Day the Music Died."

Dropped some clothing layers. Need to find a headband for the stairs.
