Out west Sox, niece, stingy Bruins, radio equanimity, David Smith, boozy Kinks, knowing Nick

Wednesday 4/3/24

Lighter matters.

The Red Sox beat the Athletics, but needed extras to do so. Extra innings in regular season baseball games is like the shootout in hockey to me. Someone wins, okay, but it's not indicative of a real win. The difference is, you lose the shootout in hockey--at least in the NHL's regular season--and you get something.

I spoke briefly to my little niece, who has returned from California. She came on the phone--not FaceTime--and said hi, and I asked who this was, and she said, "It's Amelia," and I said, "They told me you had moved away to California and we wouldn't talk for ten years," to which she replied, "I no move to California!"

The Bruins with the shutout over Nashville last night, Ullmark with 30-something saves, so he faced rubber. Swayman was the better goalie earlier, now it's Ullmark, and I bet the Bruins' brass loves that because they get to think, "It's high time for our playoff goalie platoon system!" and I don't believe you can be successful in the playoffs that way. But who knows? Maybe they'll do it and that will become a thing for other teams.

Jace Pearson in Tales of the Texas Rangers is the most unflappable character in all of classic radio. Nothing visibly fazes him. He simply handles situations. Which isn't to say this isn't a believable character--more like it's an inspirational one. There are things to be learned here.

Picked up a David Smith bio for a couple bucks.

Easter was a hard day. I was at the cafe reading M.R. James, and first the Kinks' "Victoria" came on the sound system--with that boozy, "seen it all," lower-register Ray Davies vocal--and then Nick Drake's "Pink Moon" and I felt somewhat better. "Saw it written and I saw it say"--great first line. Has a singer ever sounded more knowing than the singer of "Pink Moon"? I think not.
