FaceTime with the kids, the mysterious parking lot incident, cake talk, visit to my dad's bench

Wednesday 9/11/24

Spoke to my nieces and nephew last night on FaceTime. Grammie was babysitting over at their house. They boy had to pick an instrument for school, so he picked the drums, or, rather, a single snare drum, which he played for me, as did Amelia. Of course. Later I sent him a link to "Toad" from Cream's Fresh Cream.

I didn't want anyone to feel left out, so I made additional titles official. Lilah is my best pal and Charlie is my fellow C-Dawg. Amelia, of course, is my buddy.

I had a long chat with her, which was basically just her talking with a philosophical expression on her face. The thing is, she's a little hard to understand. She is in speech therapy. I try to say, "Oh, that's good," at parts where I feel it would be appropriate, but sometimes she's saying something she doesn't think is good at all and she gets frustrated if you can't understand her. Which is understandable.

They went out to dinner last night and something happened after but I'm not sure what. A woman made a remark to Amelia in the parking lot. This must not have been anything bad (but maybe embarrassing?), because my mom was joking about it on FaceTime. She asked Amelia if she could tell me what the woman said and Amelia howled, "No!!!!" Then my mom was like, "I'll tell you later" and again Amelia said no. She was never to tell. I called my mom today and she was about to tell me but this time it was I who said no, that was okay. My buddy didn't want it talked about and you have to respect your buddy.

It was funny, though: When we were on the phone last night I said, "Let me guess what the woman said." My mom goes, "You won't be able to." Amelia's sitting there, too, so I say, "I bet the woman said that Amelia was a really big girl and super cool." Well. Her face lit up with that. Being a big girl is very important to Amelia. If you say something along the lines of, "Back when you were little," she's all ears. Sometimes I think she thinks she's forty.

Then she ate some chocolate cake and we discussed our favorite kinds of cake. I asked her if she had ever had ice cream cake and she looked at me as if to say, "What do you think I am, some rube?"

I got to BC early on Saturday. Just walked around and did some reading sitting on the grass. And did some push-ups and some planks. Looked at the books in the bookstore for classes and was disgusted. Color color color color color color color. What's your color color color color color color. Visited my dad's bench in the Rose Garden and sent a photo of it to my mom because I knew she'd probably like to see it and knowing I went there.
